I don’t know if this is an original quote, but it’s one I gleaned from a conversation I had with Jon Peacock, from Mission Church, last week.  I’ve been thinking a lot about it ever since, and it’s implications for my future.  Namely:

  • How can I better focus my energies and gifting so that I can personally make a deeper ministry impact?  Are there little things distracting me from the main things I should be focusing my attention on?
  • As a church, what are the ways we should narrow our focus to make a deeper impact– in terms of calling, teaching, discipleship, programming, or ecclesiology?

I think the reason those words resonated with me so deeply was because I’ve recently felt like my ministry focus had grown a little too wide, and my impact wasn’t quite as deep as I felt it could be.  It’s a trap a lot of people in ministry can get into– Getting sucked into the extras.  And there are plenty of extras that become so ubiquitous they’re often difficult to detect.  We fall in love with the extras.

So part of my journey is really considering my focus . . . zeroing in on those realities I think should be at the center of the bullseye for me and the future ministry God has entrusted in my hands.  And I think there may be difficult decisions along the way of what NOT to do.
